Electronic music artist, Zaynik (AKA Connor Blake), has made a great first impression and debut with the release of Strangers which features vocalist Melissa Kate.
After many years of hard work, Zaynik described his debut as a surreal feeling. “I’ve been producing on and off since I was about 14 years old,” he said. “I had been on a long hiatus up until last year after I was in a really bad car accident that took a close friend of mine. Returning to music felt like it would be a healthy outlet for my emotions at the time, but I can’t say I expected the level of support and positive feedback I’ve received and I’m extremely grateful for it.”
Strangers brings to life the heartbreaking reality of loss and the pain encountered in pushing someone away that was once a vital part of your existence to the point that you now feel like strangers. For many people, the track’s content is relatable, real and raw, which makes it such a powerful song. Zaynik wrote the track after he lost a close friend of his in an unfortunate car accident. “Over the course of the following year, I’d fallen into a rut in which I had driven a lot of people in my life away,” he described.
Melissa Kate’s vocals on the track takes its listeners on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. “Melissa is a phenomenal vocalist. The power and control in her voice was exactly what a track like this needed. I definitely know I made the right choice having her on the track.”
Music is a therapeutic form for many artists who use their platform to tell their stories and help their listeners who have gone through similar life experiences. This is why Zaynik hopes Strangers can bring common ground between those who have dealt with what he is going through. The concept behind the lyrics is something he feels we’ve all been through at some point in our lives in one way or another and feels as though if this song can help someone through this experience, then he has done his job.
“If there’s one thing I hope people take away from this song, is that you’re not alone in dealing with losing someone close to you and that it’s okay to be open about these things.”
Encapsulated in a mesmerising blend of future bass, trap and pop, Zaynik and Melissa Kate harness a diverse range of emotion from a soft melancholic guitar with shimmering vocals to a triumphant electronic drop reminiscent of Flume.
“I knew Strangers was meant to be a powerful song from the beginning,” Zaynik said. “The song was written melodic central from the beginning with a melancholic chord structure in mind. It is combined with live guitar that adds a bridging element between an exclusively EDM track and a radio-ready pop song. The powerful and low-end side to it makes its presence known throughout the track, adding a feeling of depth and strength. The small background elements compliment the track bringing the listener into the music more.”
Electronic music is constantly growing in Australia for all the right reasons and trcaks such as Strangers showcase the beauty of it. Zaynik described the genre as the sound of a generation, simply because there is such great variety between genres of electronica just as there is much diversity between genres of music in the traditional sense.
“Unlimited possibilities in sound design and stylistic approach ensues that something new and interesting comes along extremely often and that definitely fits in with the fast-paced world we live in today. It is growing and changing at an incredible rate and I hope I can leave my mark as an artist that has a meaning and a story behind every song,” he added.
With multiple collaborations in the works, including another single release, Zaynik is an artist to keep on your radar.
