Melbourne-based future beats producer Illstrd (Stuart Brander), has chased a nostalgic 90’s vibe with his undeniable summer jam, Ain’t The One. This comes as the producer’s next move after garnishing huge success with his latest single, Work Hard featuring Ceeko, which now sits on more than 150,000 streams on Spotify alone, as well as receiving plays on Triple J and being featured on Apple Music’s Best of the week and Spotify’s New Music Friday playlists.

“It’s probably one of my favourite tracks I’ve done in a while. I feel like I’m getting closer to a sound that represents me more and takes my sound further. With each song I’m putting out, my sound is progressing,” he said.

“The song was written from the perspective of a girl who’s being chased by a dude. She’s acting like she really wants him, even though she doesn’t. So, it’s just you’re being arrogant and you’re just acting like I really want you, but I really don’t. You’re not as good as you think you are.

“I just wanted it to be a fun song and not too serious. It’s a summer track with a bit of attitude.”

With writing contributions from good friends Maddy Rowe and Mark (New Haven), Illstrtd was able to bring his vision to life. “The song was written, recorded and produced in my studio in Melbourne. We started the whole thing from scratch with literally just some chords and melody ideas that Mark and Maddy were messing with.

“We got in the room and we were just talking about music and songs we liked. We wanted to do something that was super throwback and had a 90’s R&B vibe to it. I was messing around with chords and going through sounds. Maddy and Mark are really good at coming up with melodies on the fly, so they were just singing a bunch of melodies and stuff. We started recording melody ideas and then it all came together fairly easily and then they just smashed out the lyrics on their own.”

According to Illstrtd, doing it yourself comes with many pros and cons. “Starting from scratch is a funny one because it can go both ways. If you get in a room with someone and the vibes just aren’t there or it’s not really clicking, you can waste a lot of time. Whereas, if you have a bunch of tracks that you’ve already pre made, it can be easy to say, ‘Just write to this one.’ But, on the other hand, if you do that, it doesn’t give the cong writer, the artist, to be involved with how the music comes out, so it’s a bit less of a collaborative process.”

It’s been a big and hard working year for Illstrtd as he gears up to finish more music and set himself up for an even bigger 2019. “I’ve got so much music that needs to be tied off so I can put it all out. I’ve a handful of demos I’ve done with lots of different artists here. I’m really excited about that. I’ve really just got to finish the production of them, get them all mixed, mastered and locked down, so I can keep releasing music. I just want people to hear my music and enjoy it.”
